Big Bone Lick
I feel the bones of great beasts
sucking through the ooze,
the furry souls of mammoths
terraced in the muck,
tongues of jealous fossils
itching for my salt.
Among the bone-herds
poking from the marsh
are 10-pound teeth and tapir skulls,
tusks of arctic elephants
curved gracefully as swans.
I stretch my tent
on borrowed ribs,
I bunk on ivory spines.
My sleep is strung with broken pearls,
trapped mammals sticky
in my dreams,
extinction and the Age of Ice
nudging at my meat.
